Wendy’s is releasing free Final Fantasy-style RPG on Steam

Wendy's is taking its beef with McDonald's to a whole new level, releasing a free Final Fantasy-style RPG where players battle fast-food-inspired monsters to save the world.

The fast-food giant is entering the world of gaming with WendyQuest: Legend of the Four Corner Stones, a retro-inspired JRPG featuring turn-based combat, pixel art, and enough food puns to make even the most dedicated dad groan.

Developed by 81monkeys, the game puts Wendy's iconic redheaded mascot in the role of a sword-wielding hero tasked with saving the kingdom of Savoria from an evil organization known as Mech Corp.

According to the game's official Steam listing, the villainous Dr. Mechborg has unleashed a curse called "Mechtosis," threatening the kingdom with frozen beef, soggy fries, and other culinary atrocities.

Armed with sacred spatulas and an ancient prophecy, Wendy must collect four magical stones to put an end to the madness.

WendyQuest takes aim at McDonald's with hilarious enemies

While WendyQuest draws inspiration from classic Final Fantasy games, it's also packed with references to the restaurant's real-world rivals.

Enemies include the suspiciously named "Big Mech" and "Mech Chicken," seemingly poking fun at McDonald's Big Mac and McChicken sandwiches.

Other opponents include "Golden Archers" and "Hot Sludge Sundaes," making it pretty clear which fast-food chain Wendy's has beef with.

Fortunately, Wendy won't be fighting alone. Players can recruit companions including the French Fry Archer, Spicy Chickeneer, and Frosty Mage, each possessing different strengths in combat.

The adventure spans five food-themed regions, including salty forests, seasoned deserts, and Frosty-capped mountains. Players can also time attacks to deal additional damage during turn-based battles.

Perhaps the funniest detail is the game's description proudly declaring: "WendyQuest is 100% fresh and 100% human-made!"

Even the PC requirements are a joke. Minimum specifications call for a "Potato" processor, "Deep Fryer" graphics card, and a sound card powered by salt. Ketchup is optional.

Of course, Wendy's isn't the first fast-food chain to venture into gaming. McDonald's previously released a retro Game Boy Color-style game starring Grimace, while KFC famously launched a dating simulator where players could romance Colonel Sanders.

Ironically, McDonald's also teamed up with Square Enix for a Dragon Quest collaboration earlier in 2026, bringing themed burgers and collectible Slimes to Japan.

WendyQuest is taking things a step further by promising players actual food rewards for playing. However, the developers haven't revealed how these rewards will work or what players can earn.

The game will be completely free when it launches on Steam, although an official release date has yet to be announced. For now, hungry gamers can add WendyQuest to their wishlists.

Whether WendyQuest becomes a surprise indie hit or another bizarre fast-food marketing stunt remains to be seen. Either way, getting to beat up a Big Mech without spending a dime sounds like a pretty good deal.
