A new iteration of the Borg is making its debut on November 13, as part of a massive Star Trek release that unites characters from the history of the franchise, letting them battle across time and space. In Star Trek, the Borg go around the universe assimilating other life forms and adding them to the collective.
Because of TV show budget limitations, the regular Borg Drones of the '90s looked like pale humans wearing leather cyborg gear with lights strapped to their heads. Thankfully, the cheap aesthetic didn't diminish their fear factor, as the Borg are among the best Star Trek villains, and may even be the most terrifying. Now, a new Magic: The Gathering design is expanding what Borg can be.
Star Trek Magic: The Gathering Crossover Introduces Cat Borgs
Magic: The Gathering is releasing a Star Trek crossover set on November 13, 2026. Wizards of the Coast has been revealing previews of cards from the set, one of which appeared on the Sol4r1s Instagram page and was reposted to the magicTCG Reddit page. The new card is called Overflow Submatrix, which shows a new kind of Borg based on a cat alien. While it's not specified exactly which alien species the Borg Drone represents, the Star Trek expanded universe has several feline creatures that could fit the mold.
It bears mentioning that this is just an artistic choice and has no mechanical meaning in Magic: The Gathering, where cats are not only a creature, but have their own support cards. This new Borg artwork is just a chance to show what other alien species could look like after being assimilated, as it would have been financially impossible to create a Drone like this during the run of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

The Enemies of the Federation Are Represented in Magic: The Gathering
The Star Trek set for Magic: The Gathering features characters from every iteration of the franchise, which includes the villains as well as the heroes. Naturally, the Borg are an entire faction unto themselves in Magic: The Gathering, with the "We Are The Borg" Commander deck containing White/Blue/Black cards that specialize in capturing enemy creatures, mimicking the assimilation powers of the Federation's greatest enemy.
Overflow Submatrix offers an example of how the Borg function, being an Artifact Creature with the Borg subtype, who lets the player summon another Artifact Creature from the graveyard with a Finality Counter, meaning the next time it dies, it's exiled. This means that the Borg can keep on coming, bringing more and more units to the field, overwhelming the enemy, assimilating those they capture, and destroying those that resist.
