There are plenty of jobs that require a little teamwork, but being a bio-engineered space dog sent to hostile planets to fight off alien swarms has to be one of the more unusual career choices.

GRAVHOUNDS is now available through Xbox Game Preview, bringing a mixture of co-op survival, base building and gravity-bending combat to Xbox Series X|S and PC, with Xbox Play Anywhere support and a day-one arrival on Xbox Game Pass.

Developed and published by Octopus Panic, this is an early-access-style experience that is still a work in progress. Players are being invited to jump into the unfinished game, help shape its development and see how much they can achieve before the increasingly dangerous alien swarm gets the better of them.

Good Dogs. Dangerous Jobs.

GRAVHOUNDS puts you in control of a crew of specially engineered canine workers, sent to some decidedly unfriendly corners of the galaxy. You can tackle the operation alone or team up with up to three other players, combining your abilities to gather resources, establish a base and hold back the swarm.

One of the more entertaining tools at your disposal is the Grav Beam, which lets you manipulate gravity to fling objects around the battlefield. That includes throwing useful supplies to teammates, but also sending incoming enemies flying. There’s a fairly obvious opportunity for some chaotic multiplayer moments here, particularly when someone gets a little too enthusiastic with the physics.

It’s that chaos which has seen as include GRAVHOUNDS in our Best Games of November article – and that’s taking into account the fact it isn’t yet a full release too.

Build A Base, Then Try To Keep It Standing

Survival requires more than a good throwing arm. Turrets, generators and fabricators can be deployed to expand your operation, while pipelines transport resources and provide power across hostile terrain. You’ll also need to think about extraction, because staying on a planet for longer can bring better rewards but gives the swarm more time to become a serious problem.

Each shift brings opportunities to unlock new abilities, weapons and upgrades. Bonuses can be stacked and loadouts reshaped as you adapt to the growing threat, while high-speed movement lets your Gravhound boost in any direction, hover and rush to the aid of struggling teammates.

A Game Preview Worth Keeping An Eye On

Octopus Panic was founded by veterans of 343 Industries and DICE, with development led by Josh Holmes, former Halo 4 Creative Director and Head of Halo Studios. That’s an interesting pedigree for a project built around cooperative action and increasingly frantic encounters.

“Reaching Early Access is a huge milestone for our team, but we see it as the beginning of the next chapter.” said Josh Holmes, Co-Founder of Octopus Panic. “We’re incredibly grateful to everyone who’s played, shared feedback, or helped spread the word about GRAVHOUNDS. We’re excited to get the game into more players’ hands, hear what they think, and keep making it better together.”

However, GRAVHOUNDS is launching through Game Preview, so this isn’t a finished product. Its features, balance and overall experience may change as development continues. Anyone jumping in should be comfortable playing an evolving game rather than expecting a polished, completed release. You know the drill, yeah?

For Game Pass subscribers, the day-one arrival provides an opportunity to see what those space-faring dogs are capable of without committing to a separate purchase. Between the gravity manipulation, resource management and four-player survival action, there’s certainly potential for some wonderfully messy missions.

The real question is how long your pack can last before somebody makes a catastrophic mistake with the Grav Beam. Hopefully, it isn’t the dog carrying all the important supplies.

You’ll find GRAVHOUNDS on the Xbox Store, playable on Xbox Series X|S and PC. It’s on Steam too.
