We spoke with Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Battle Director Teruki Endo about the journey from Final Fantasy 7 Remake to the upcoming release of Revelation.
TJ Denzer September 10, 2026 11:15 AM Shacknews 1Final Fantasy 7 Revelation is a game about 12 years in the making. It took all of Final Fantasy 7 Remake and Rebirth to get here, and now the developers are readying to put a bow on this story. It’s a breathtaking thought, as Head of Video Greg Burke learned from Director Naoki Hamaguchi and Battle Director Teruki Endo in an interview with them.
“Throughout the 10-plus years of development, each time we would release a game, people would come up to me (like after Remake) and ask ‘oh what’s Part 2 going to be like?’” Hamaguchi explained. “And after Rebirth, people would ask me ‘what’s Part 3 going to be like. The one thing I notice is now that we’re releasing the concluding part of the trilogy, those questions have shifted to ‘what game are you working on next?’ Seeing the number of people being curious about what I or my team are going to work on next… I think it’s proof that we were able to deliver really solid, strong games throughout the remake series trilogy.”
When asked about any kind of shifts in regards to player feedback or whether the team simply stuck to executing a plan, the directors claimed it was an interesting journey of design priorities from game to game. Remake was meant to be a focused, story-driven game. Rebirth expanded the adventure to a more open-world design. And with Revelation, the team sought to scale up that open world from a region to a planetary exploration scale.
The systems, combat, and character choices have all grown in similar manner and some of them are addressed above, so check out the full interview and stay tuned to the Final Fantasy 7 Revelation topic for more news and updates.
